Glen Island Park is on the Long Island Sound in New Rochelle. It offers an 18 hole miniature golf course and picnic areas and small beaches. It is also home of the Glen Island Harbor Club. A County owned privately operated catering facility. Rumor was that if gambling became legal in NY that a gaming casino would be built there. But then thats said about all the islands off New Rochelle.
i love those shots of that guy with the fishing pole. especially the vertical shot.

These shots are stunning. The color gradations in the sky, water and rocks are spectacular. And the framing is spot on. I kept coming back to look at them again.

Can you please tell me the history of the castle, and where I may be able to get more info on it? Thanks,
Neil

The castle dates back to the revolutionary war and the cannons you see are on the actual locations of revolutionary batteries. Near the castle is also the remenants of an underground tunnle used to sneak soliders and goods around the island. Nowadays one castle has been preserved and one is a boat house. Party on!!

These are GREAT pictures!
Glen Island Park is very beautiful, and has a rich past.
Glen Island Casino is where music history was made.
One person who played there was Glenn Miller.

My Dad worked in the Promotion Dept of the NY Daily News 1950-1980. He covered the Harvest Moon Ball all those years. Some of the prelims took place at Glen Island Casino. I am doing a scrap book for my Mom's 90th birthday and came to this site for a photo of the casino. She has many wonderful memories of nights there. We visited in 1997 for her 80th and it was closed for renovation although one of the workers let us in to walk through. Thanks for your photos.

Unfortantly, not to many folks these days (2008) remember that the woman on top of the northern rock on Glen Island Cove, just below the cannon facing the Fort Slocum's dead water tower, is actually Pocohantas's great great great grandmother who never really could get a grasp on the idea of -Hey- Hello- 1-Canoe, 2-Land on rock, 3-Try to fish, 4-Wake up after snooze, 5-Wonder went frickin' canoe went.6- Wait for next tidal shift & in hope of canoe returnal.

Muffa- I find that your overall knowledge of Glen Island- its past and present- is far beyond any research that I have compiled. Please keep in touch.

I will be married at Glen Island in October of 09. Does anyone know how I can gain access to the castle for some photo ops?
Thanks!

The castle is the boathouse for the Iona College and Sarah Lawrence College rowing teams. You cannot gain access to the inside of the castle, however you can surly take advantage of the outside, as well as, the dungeon and the well behind the castle.

Glen Island was originally created in 1879 as a summer resort for a business representative named John H. Starin.
Originally, the park consisted of a zoo, museum and beach. The German Rhineland castle was created to serve as a beer garden and restaurant. (It was not a Revolutionary War anything!)

Was browsing and found this site and pictures. As I child I went to Daylight Day Camp (Bronx) and we spend our days at Glen Island. We used to climb onto the cannon and look over the "Sound" and swam at the beach, Also went to the casino and played on the grounds there. Very fond memories of camp and the island.

When I was a young lad in 1945 Ft Slocum was my last duty station with the Air Force in 1945. It was than a storage place for Air Force documents. Taking the small ferry boat from the slip at New Rochelle and to the right was the Glen Island Casino with the sounds of music. I still remember after all these years
